Quinnell ends career with nice symmetry

Wales... 32 Canada..

Wales ... 32 Canada ... 21 Scott Quinnell was given an emotional send-off from the international stage as Wales maintained their unbeaten autumn record with a comfortable victory at the Millennium Stadium. The Lions number eight's retirement was confirmed immediately after the final whistle as he finally bowed to a persistent knee injury.

The 30-year-old, who made his debut against Canada in 1993, had come on as a replacement with 24 minutes left to win his 52nd cap, having captained Wales in eight of them. He bowed out in the unfamiliar black shirt of Wales with the Canadians playing in their normal red.

But it was a winning finale as Wales followed up victories over Romania and Fiji, though there was no repeat of last week's seven-try feast against the far more physical and hard tackling Canadians.

Outhalf Stephen Jones followed up his 21 points against Fiji with another perfect afternoon as he landed all eight attempts at goal to finish with 22 points.

Jones needed to be on form, with opposite number Jared Barker ready to punish every Welsh infringement of which there were too many for coach Steve Hansen's linking. Barker kicked 18 points, missing just one long-range attempt.

Barker's boot kept his side in the hunt far longer than Wales would have wanted after they had opened up a 16-point first-half lead at one stage, with Canada's Newport prop Rod Snow having been punished for the visitors' incessant infringements.

Wales had used their numerical advantage to score their first try as hooker Robin McBryde marked his return with his maiden score for his country.

But Wales did not seal victory until 13 minutes from the end when wing Mark Jones made ground down the left before finding Jamie Robinson in support.
