Golf Madeira Open: England's Jamie Spence moved to within one shot of the lead before more bad weather played havoc with the Madeira Island Open.Spence was one of 60 players unable to complete their first rounds on Thursday because of rain.
The 40-year-old was four under par with six to play but was faced with the toughest hole on the course on his return and duly bogeyed the 202-yard par-three fourth, which features a 180-yard carry over a ravine.
But he hit back with three birdies in his last four holes to card a six-under-par 66, although that was still four shots off the lead held by Australian Brad Kennedy, who also came back on Friday to complete a superb 62.
But Spence's second round moved him to 10 under par and just one behind Kennedy before play was suspended, and eventually abandoned, due to more heavy rain. Only 18 of the 144-strong field had completed their rounds.
Kennedy had played nine holes before the weather intervened, picking up two birdies and one bogey to stand at 11 under.
Denmark's Knud Storgaard and American Rob Rashell were third on eight under.
Ireland's Graeme McDowell was three under par after 15 holes before the weather put an end to his round. Philip Walton, who shot a first round of 77, had not started his second round before play was abandoned.
