Goals late in the second half from Fernando Hierro and Clarence Seedorf gave defending champions Real Madrid a 2-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Spanish capital. Hierro's spot kick enabled Real to take advantage of the numerical advantage they had held since the 42nd-minute sending-off of Salvatore Fresi in the Group C game.

Seedorf put the result beyond doubt in the final minute after he was sent clean through on goal.

Last year's beaten finalists Juventus recovered from a goal down and the dismissal of goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi to draw 2-2 with Galatasaray in their Group B match.

Alessandro Birindelli headed a 68th-minute equaliser for Juve five minutes after Aydin Umit's precise 20-metre shot had given the Turkish champions a brief glimpse of a major upset.

The Turin side had made the perfect start when Filippo Inzaghi's superb 17th-minute overhead kick beat Brazil's World Cup goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel. But the match turned in the 32nd minute when German referee Marcus Merk had no choice but to show Peruzzi the red card, after the Italian international handled a goal-bound lob from Hakan Sukur outside his area.

Shortly after the red card, Juve's injury-depleted defence left Sukur unmarked in the six-yard box and the former Torino player side-footed past replacement goalkeeper Michelangelo Rampulla to level the scores.

Bayern Munich, who will take on Manchester United at home next time around, looked to be returning from an away match with maximum points after leading 1-0 at Brondby in Group D with only two minutes to go. But the home side stunned the Germans with two goals in the last two minutes. Porto, who defeated Bayern in the 1987 European Cup Final, were another side stunned by late strikes after leading Greek champions Olympiakos 2-0 with five minutes to go only to finish level.

Panathinaikos, the second Greek team, playing in Group E, started with a win, coming from behind to defeat Dynamo Kiev 2-1.

Finnish champions HJK Helsinki, tipped by many to lose all six matches, were also shattered by a last-minute goal from PSV Eindho- ven. Eindhoven saved their blushes with a winner from Arnold Bruggink's last kick of the match.

Kaiserslautern, the surprise German champions, secured a 1-0 victory on their debut when midfielder Martin Wagner scored four minutes from half-time against Benfica.

Meanwhile an Ajax supporter was stabbed in the street before the Dutch team's away game against Croatia Zagreb last night. Ajax were then held to a goalless draw.
