Cipriani makes way for Flood

England v New Zealand : Danny Cipriani has been dropped from the England team to play New Zealand on Saturday

England v New Zealand: Danny Cipriani has been dropped from the England team to play New Zealand on Saturday. Cipriani was widely criticised for his performance in last Saturday's 42-6 defeat by South Africa when, for the third time, he gave away a try with a charged down kick.

Leicester's Toby Flood will replace Cipriani at outhalf as one of three changes made by manager Martin Johnson following last weekend's record Twickenham defeat to South Africa.

Flood's last England start came against the All Blacks in the second Test of the summer tour to New Zealand.

"If I was coach I would have made the same decision," said Cipriani. "Against South Africa I didn't make it easy for him to pick me again. It wasn't the greatest and it didn't go to plan.

"Mentally I am fine. I think I have learned a lot and this series has been a vital experience for me. I am not looking at it as a setback.

"I have a different job this weekend. I need to try and be inspiring to the rest of the team.

"We are playing the toughest team in the world and I could be on in the first minute. There is no way I could have a different mindset.

"My confidence won't dip at all. I know what I can do. I need to make sure when I come off the bench I am firing. I might have to make a vital decision so there was no way I could step off."

Cipriani is only seven matches into his comeback from a gruesome ankle break and believes he is still a couple of weeks short of returning to his best form.

"It wasn't a case of too much, too soon because it is what I wanted but I am still getting back into it," he added."I have shown glimpses of what I can do, and the breaks I can make, but I haven't shown the consistency I had wanted to."

Flanker Tom Rees has been dropped to the bench with Michael Lipman to start on the openside while Nick Kennedy returns to the secondrow in place of Tom Palmer.

Prop Andrew Sheridan has missed out with a neck injury but New Zealand-born inside centre Riki Flutey has recovered from a hamstring problem to line up against the All Blacks.

Johnson had promised there would be no sweeping changes to the side crushed 42-6 by the Springboks last weekend - but the decision to replace Cipriani with Flood was not unexpected.
