Bayonne 21 Connacht 35:Bayonne were left facing an uphill struggle to qualify from Amlin Challenge Cup Pool One as they lost 35-21 at home to Connacht on Saturday night.
Outhalf Ian Keatley did the damage for the Irish side, who had nothing to lose having already missed out on qualification, as he slotted six penalties and a conversion for a personal haul of 20 points. A penalty try and scores from Brian Tuohy and Fionn Carr completed their scoring.
Thibault Lacroix and Marc Baget crossed for Bayonne but they now need a bonus point win at Harlequins next weekend if they are to have any chance of advancing to the last eight.
Connacht were dominant in the first half and the boot of Keatley had them in the lead after just one minute. He added two more before Carr was taken out when chasing a Tuohy's kick through and Connacht were awarded a penalty-try.
The boot of Julien Audy and a try from Lacroix kept the homeside in touch before the break and when Baget added a second try minutes after the restart it looked like the homeside may come good.
However, Audy missed the conversion and it proved to be their last score as Tuohy and then Carr, with a 60-metre run, ran in scores for Elwood's men.
