Edinburgh are on the move from Murrayfield after confirming a deal to stage their games at the home of Watsonians at Myreside.

The capital club have been based at the home of Scottish rugby since 2004 but have been frustrated by the lack of atmosphere they are able to produce in the 67,000-capacity arena.

Now the Pro12 outfit – who average around 4,500 for home games – hope to generate a more impassioned reaction by setting up base at Myreside in the south-west of the city.

They will make the switch to their new playing base – owned by George Watson’s College – in January after playing the first half of next season at Murrayfield.

Myreside was the club’s main base as the Edinburgh Reivers in the first year of the Celtic League in 2001-02 before they moved first to Meadowbank and then to the national stadium.

Jonny Petrie, managing director of Edinburgh Rugby said: "This is a hugely positive step for Edinburgh Rugby and we are delighted at the opportunity to play our home matches at Myreside.

“This is about building a strong future for the club at a home ground in the city that better suits our needs and improves the matchday experience for fans and players alike.

“I’d like to thank George Watson’s College for proposing the idea and for their support in working with us to develop the concept into a credible plan.

“We will now be liaising closely with all relevant parties to ensure a smooth transition over the coming months.”

Edinburgh plan to play home matches and host captain’s runs at Myreside, with their administrative functions and training facilities remaining at Murrayfield.
