Scotland, looking rusty, scraped and scrambled their way to a winning start in their tour of South Africa thanks to a Craig Chalmers penalty on the stroke of full time.

Scotland had to wait only four minutes before registering their first points when captain Gary Armstrong went on the blindside to score in the corner.

Border replied with a penalty goal by Paul de Jongh, who then put his side in front with a try. A penalty by Craig Chalmers levelled the scores before Metcalfe showed his skills to sent Craig Moir over. Chalmers converted, but again Border hit back with another try by de Jongh. Border edged into the lead once more with a Kaya Malatona try but two penalties by Chalmers restored Scotland's advantage.

Hunter and Armstrong combined at a set scrum, and flanker Cammie Mather finished off the move with the Scots third try, converted by Chalmers.
