ARSENAL goalkeeper David Seaman was voted England's footballer of the year yesterday on the strength of his superb performances during June's European Championship.
The award, which is decided on the votes of a select panel of football correspondents, is a tribute to the 33-year-old Yorkshireman who pipped golden boot winner, six-goal Alan Shearer.
Seaman was England's hero when he was put on the spot during the summer tournament, notably with the penalty save from Scotland's Gary McAllister which helped set up a vital 2-0 victory over the old enemy.
He also made another crucial save in the shoot-out with Spain, saving from Miguel Nadal to put England through to the semi-finals against Germany.
Seaman received his award from England coach Glenn Hoddle who is worried about the Arsenal's goalkeeper's fitness for the World Cup trip to Georgia.
