Seniors Ryder Cup planned

A SENIORS' Ryder Cup could become a reality as early as the year 2000

A SENIORS' Ryder Cup could become a reality as early as the year 2000. European Senior Tours managing director, Andy Stubbs, said yesterday: "The aim is November 2000. The problem we have and have always had is with the American side.

"They have so many events going on already that they have to find time to fit it in. The suggestion for 2000 is popular at the moment because there is nothing else going on at the same time."

The players have long wanted a senior version of the Ryder Cup, which would see the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Ray Floyd pitted against Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher.

Chairman of the tour committee Tommy Horton said: "It is inevitable. We have pushed it for so lone now and, with the seniors tour being seen as serious golf, it is a certainty. I hear that a major company has offered sponsorship for the event and that puts us even closer."

Horton leads the European senior tour this season and relishes the prospect of facing Nicklaus especially.

"I would love to face Jack again. My wife said to me the other night that I could beat him so I would love the chance. This has needed imagination and initiative. If all goes according to plan then it will happen but it has to be done right or it won't work."

The event will be based on a combination of Walker and Ryder Cups. Qualification will be points based and awarded for tour events with the top eight having, automatic selection and two captain's choices.

"It is essential for the game of golf that this happens," added Stubbs.
