ALAN SHEARER yesterday played down reports that he was set to make a British record £10 million move to champions Manchester United. Newspaper reports had indicated that the Old Trafford side had made an approach for the 25 year old striker who has scored 130 goals from 170 games for the Ewood Park club.

But Shearer, speaking after completing his first full training session since a groin operation after signing off with his 36th and 37th goals of the season against Wimbledon last month, sought to dispel the suggestion that he was Old Trafford bound.

"I don't know anything about it, although I have to admit I'm very flattered to be linked with a club like United. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still contracted to play for Blackburn. I signed a four year deal last summer and there are three years still to go.

"It's not the first time there have been these sort of stories about me. Earlier this year, I was supposed to be going to Newcastle and on other occasions people have talked about other moves but nothing has come of them.

"It doesn't bother me. I think all through the summer various people will be linked with various clubs. It was my turn this morning and it will be somebody else's tomorrow. Certainly I've heard nothing from Blackburn.

Shearer's lack of match fitness means he is unlikely to feature in the England team to face Hungary at Wembley on Saturday, although he will certainly, fitness permitting, play during next week's tour through China and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, United last night secured the services of their record breaking manager Alex Ferguson to the year 2000.

Ferguson pulled back from apparent threats to quit Old Trafford following a prolonged contract wrangle by agreeing to put pen to a new four year deal.

Ferguson, 54, who this season guided the Old Trafford outfit to a unique second Double, was looking for a six year deal to take him through to retirement.

The United board's reluctance led to rumours that the Scot could be set to walk out on the club he has ruled for 10 years. But United spokesman Ken Ramsden said "Manchester United is pleased to announce that, following its annual remuneration committee meeting, it has agreed a new four year contract with Alex Ferguson.
