Sheriff YC 3 Shelbourne 2:SHERIFF PROVIDED the shock of the round, giving runaway First Division leaders Shelbourne a two-goal start before dumping them out of the cup at Tolka Park.
Willie Molloy, younger brother of cup winner Trevor, was the Sheriff hero with a brace of goals as the AUL champions stormed back to record the greatest win in their history.
Conan Byrne gave Shelbourne the lead on 14 minutes when side-footing home Chris Mulhall’s cross in from the right. Shelbourne doubled their lead six minutes before the break when Lorcan Fitzgerald shot past Lee Murphy.
But plucky Sheriff didn’t lie down and battled back into the game.Thomas Meehan saw Delaney off his line to score with an audacious 40-yard lob on 53 minutes.
In a flurry of action, Shelbourne’s Hughes blazed a penalty over the bar after Anthony Kavanagh was booked for pulling down Fitzgerald.
Incredibly, Sheriff levelled on 62 minutes when Molloy curled home a brilliant free kick. and two minutes later Molloy provided the winner with an even more sublime goal, rifling home a stunner to the roof of the net from all of 25 yards.
