A mother and son, a local member and an English professional became an irresistible combination in the Smurfit Christy O'Connor Pro-Am at the K Club yesterday. The team, including Noreen McManus and her son Kieran, and led by 24-year-old Steve Webster, swept to victory with a sparkling 52 points.

Meanwhile, Irish players claimed three of the top four professional prizes. Eamonn Darcy and Scotland's Dean Robertson each received £2,428 after five-under-par rounds of 67, a stroke clear of Gary Murphy and Stephen Hamill.

With one to count, the scoring from both professionals and amateurs was of a high quality in ideal conditions on a beautifully-presented course. This was emphasised by a 71 from Des Smyth, despite a wretched 10 at the par-four eighth, where three drives which were intended to fade off the Liffey instead found a watery grave.

In the team event, Ms McManus left her colleagues in fine spirits with gross pars at four of the first six holes, contributing a total of 14 points en route. Then came local member Mary Ward with a crucial, nett par at the long seventh where the other three were in the water.
