Leinster Section A Senior finalSkerries CC -15 St Columba's - 8: Skerries Community College won the Leinster Schools Section A Senior Cup for the second time in three years with a hard-fought victory over St Columba's at Donnybrook yesterday.
At an early stage, Skerries blindside flanker Michael Campbell was helped over the line by an eager set of forwards that were keen on establishing their superiority.
In the ninth minute outhalf Conal Keane's quick thinking - he shaped as though he were going to kick a five-metre penalty to touch only to move it right - and a fumbled ball in midfield distracted the St Columba's defence to allow full back Owen Keane to waltz over on the right for a 10-0 lead.
St Columba's got back into contention when Ben Sadek crashed over from a penalty five metres out following a well planned move. Unfortunately, Patrick Cooper hit the right upright from the conversion attempt.
Skerries pressure then resulted in left wing Stephen Donoghue slipping over in the left corner to make it 15-5 in the 24th minute and that was the way it stayed until the break.
The second half was all about thrust and counter-thrust as Skerries sought to make the game safe, while St Columba's battled backwith a bright, innovative approach but their only reward was a penalty by Cooper.
