Susan Smith was cast in the familiar role of record breaker when Crusaders and Dublin City Harriers dominated the club honours in the finals of the Mazda National League championships at Tullamore yesterday.

For the second time in a fortnight, Smith lowered the national 100m hurdles record, on this occasion to 13.12 seconds, to provide reassuring evidence of her form in the approach to the European championships in Budapest.

It means that she will now be nominated for both the 100m and 400m hurdles in Hungary.

The European squad was scheduled to be announced last evening but after discussing options in a meeting lasting almost two hours in Tullamore, the selectors adjourned their deliberations until this afternoon.

Mark Carroll answered any fitness doubts by competing in both the 800m and 1,500m.

Crusaders created something of a surprise by regaining the men's team title but there was compensation for Dublin City Harriers when they took the women's competition.
