Champions Tour: Des Smyth shot a final round of two-under-par 69 to claim a share of fifth place in the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am at the TPC of Tampa Bay, Lutz, Florida, yesterday.

Smyth finished five shots behind the winner Jerry Pate, who shot a final round of five-under-par 65 for an 11-under-par total of 202, to snatch a one-shot victory over Morris Hatalsky,Mark James and Hale Irwin.

Hatalsky shot a best of the day 64 to get within one shot of the winner, while overnight leader James shot 68.

Smyth, who was one over par after nine holes, fired a hat-trick of birdies from the 12th to finish on 69, while Mark McNulty shared 10th place after a final round of 73.

PGA Tour: Kirk Triplett shot a final round of nine-under-par 63 to win the Chrysler Classic of Tucson at Tucson National GC, Arizona yesterday.

Triplett started with five straight birdies in an outward half of 32 and finished with four birdies in the last five holes for his 63 and a four-round total of 22-under-par 266.

In a 10-birdie round the American dropped just one shot to par at the seventh.

Triplett won by one shot from Jerry Kelly, who fired a seven-under-par 65 to edge out Heath Slocum, overnight leader Duffy Waldorf, who started the day with a two-shot lead, and Bubba Watson for second place.

New Zealand PGA: Canada's Jim Rutledge shot a brilliant, final-round eight-under-par 64 to win the New Zealand PGA by a stroke at the Clearwater course near Christchurch on Sunday.

Rutledge's last round charge included six birdies and an eagle to storm up the leaderboard and finish at nine-under 279.

He finished a shot clear of overnight leader Jarrod Lyle and his fellow Australian Brett Rumford, who both missed their chance of joining Rutledge in a play-off.

Lyle took a bogey five at the last hole for a round of 74 while Rumford missed a birdie putt on the 18th to settle for a round of even par 72.

The New Zealand PGA is co-sanctioned by the Australasian Tour and the US PGA's Nationwide Tour.

Women's Tour: Michelle Wie made a big statement and a major move, but Meena Lee had the final say at the LPGA Tour Fields Open in the Ko Olina Golf Club, Kapolei, Hawaii.

Wie charged into contention with a six-under-par 66 but finished a shot out of the play-off that Meena Lee won on the third extra hole.

Seon Hwa Lee entered the final round with a two-shot lead but only managed a 71 while Meena Lee fired the best round of the day - a seven-under 65 to finish at 14-under 202 and force a play-off.

After trading a pair of pars, Meena buried a four-foot birdie putt to win her second LPGA title.

"It's exciting," Meena Lee said. "I had to just keep going and going but I am happy that I won."

Wie opened with a 67 at the Ko Olina Golf Club but the 16-year-old prodigy came back to the pack a bit with a 70 in the second round that left her at seven-under 137, six strokes off the pace. Her 66 left her alone in third at 13-under 203.

In her home state and in her LPGA season debut, Wie briefly grabbed a share of the lead on the back nine but ran out of holes.
