Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga looks set to start for Saints again — the 20-year-old has come under increasing scrutiny following a number of recent high-profile mistakes, including the one that saw Norwich grab an equaliser in midweek. Danny Fox could return from a knee complaint, while Frazer Richardson and Richard Chaplow are closing in on a return.

United will be without wing duo Nani and Antonio Valencia — Nani will be missing for another four or five weeks with a hamstring injury, whilst Valencia has been ruled out with a hip problem. Paul Scholes returns from suspension, whilst Ryan Giggs has shrugged off a minor hamstring complaint.

If Crouch does not make it, Michael Owen is likely to be on the bench after a hamstring problem while full-back Andy Wilkinson (back) should also be among the substitutes.

Mark Bunn will start in goal again with John Ruddy out for three months with a thigh injury — youngster Declan Rudd is expected to provide back-up from the bench. Defender Russell Martin could make his first appearance in more than a month after a back problem, but centre-half Michael Turner (shoulder) and striker Harry Kane (metatarsal) are out.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill was today waiting to hear for how long he will be without skipper Lee Cattermole as he visited a London specialist. The midfielder damaged his knee just minutes into Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with QPR and there is speculation he has damaged his medial ligament and could be sidelined for two months. Cattermole will definitely miss this match, as will central defender John O’Shea, who is battling a calf problem.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be without suspended utility man James Perch but boss Alan Pardew will still be unable to call upon central defender Steven Taylor (hamstring), midfielders Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Gabriel Obertan (toe) and Yohan Cabaye (groin surgery) and striker Shola Ameobi (groin) as he attempts to end a run of four successive defeats.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has rated both defender Gary Caldwell and midfielder David Jones as “50/50” — Jones picked up a knock to his calf during Wednesday’s defeat by Manchester City while Caldwell is recovering from a hamstring problem. Midfielders Albert Crusat (knee) and Ben Watson (broken leg), winger Ryo Miyaichi (ankle), forward Shaun Maloney (groin) and defenders Antolin Alcaraz (groin) and Ivan Ramis (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.
