FC Pyunik 2 (2) Derry City 0 (0):Derry City's hopes of progressing in the Champions League were dashed this evening after losing 2-0 to FC Pyunick in Armenia.

Scoreless after last week's first leg at the Brandywell, John Robertson's side knew a score draw would be enough to see them through.

But while the visitors had their chances they were less than clinical, although defender Darren Kelly did hit the crossbar before also forcing a superb save from Gevorg Kasparov at the death.

Derry, playing on a very poor surface, started well despite evening temperatures hitting the mid 30s.

New signing Sammy Morrow linked well in attack while strike partner Kevin McHugh went close from long range.

But despite that endeavour Derry went behind.  After 29 minutes the locals hit on the counter and Arsen Avetisyan bundled Levon Pachajyan's cross home from close range after sloppy Derry defending.

Derry should have been awarded a penalty shortly before the break but the Slovakian referee dismissed appeals after Rafael Nazaryan clipped Ciaran Martyn's heels just inside the area.

That misfortune continued into the second half when Pyunick put the tie beyond doubt 23 minutes from time.

Pachajyan, a handful all evening, crossed for Gevorg Ghazaryan whose shot from 16 yards clipped Ken Oman before nestling in the net.

Pyunick now progress to a second qualifying round meeting with formidable Ukrainian side Shaktar Donetsk.
