Less than a week after they were beaten by Cork City in the final of the FAI Cup, Longford Town has lost its manager after Alan Mathews decided to step down.

Mathews (42) had been in charge of the club for more than five years during which time he led Longford to success in the FAI Cup and the League Cup.

However, following the club's relegation at the end of this season and Longford's failure to overcome Cork City at the RDS on Sunday, Mathews tendered his resignation on Friday.
