Soccer:Jon Walters has revealed Stoke were given added motivation for the second half of their match against Wolves on Tuesday night by the way some visiting fans taunted Matthew Etherington.
The winger had to be stretchered off in the 31st minute of the Britannia Stadium clash after suffering a hamstring injury and is now doubtful for next month's FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Potters manager Tony Pulis revealed after the final whistle that he was "hoping and praying" Etherington would be fit for the Wembley showpiece, with the winger set to undergo a scan on Wednesday. But Walters was appalled by the way some Wolves fans treated Etherington as he was carried off, with chants of 'You're not going to Wembley'.
Walters admits the incident fired up the Potters to come out and complete a 3-0 victory that piled more pressure on Wolves in the relegation dogfight.
"That was very poor from them and it wound us up at half-time," Walters said in The Sentinel. "Matthew has had a very good season and we came out in the second half thinking we would do it for him. Good luck to him - we are just hoping he will be okay."
Kenwyne Jones opened the scoring for Stoke before further goals from Ryan Shawcross and Jermaine Pennant sealed Wolves' demise.
Walters added: "We kept going at them and we looked solid at the back. I don't think they had a clear chance all game. That is testament to our back four and midfield, all the way to up front.
"We defended really well all over the pitch, we were excellent on the night. We were solid, very hard to break down and our ball play was excellent. Balls were coming in left, right and centre and Kenwyne bullied defenders all game. That gave us a great platform to build on."
