Tadhg Purcell, one of the hottest properties in the League of Ireland at present, has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract with Shamrock Rovers.

The Dundrum striker (21) is the club's highest scorer this season with nine league goals and his late intervention against Waterford United on Tuesday ensured Rovers reclaimed third spot in the table.

"Pat (Scully, the manager) has looked after me and so has the club," said Purcell of the deal which keeps him at Rovers until the end of the 2009 season.

"I'm looking forward to repaying their confidence in me and want to win trophies at Shamrock Rovers.

"I'm delighted to have agreed a new contract. It's a great club with a super set-up and amazing fans. I'm here to stay."

Purcell - who played underage basketball for Ireland and GAA for Dublin - recently received a 2.1 honours degree in Botany and Science from UCD.  He has since applied for a Masters.

Rovers were one of four teams waiting to learn their fate in today's League Cup semi-final draw but it has been postponed. The FAI cited "logistical reasons" for the decision.

The draw, which also includes holders Derry City, Bohemians and UCD, will be held sometime next week.

The two semi-finals are due to be played on August 6th and 7th with the final set for October 9th.
