Soccer:Rangers captain David Weir maintained his side remained focused on their own performances after moving four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Celtic's surprise defeat to Inverness on Wednesday allowed the Gers to maintain their position at the top of the table with a crushing 4-0 win over Hearts.
“It was a surprise that Celtic lost but we had to win our three games and that was the main thing for us,” Weir said after today’s game. “I don‘t think Celtic losing was a boost. It helps, but we have to take care of ourselves and play well. It‘s all about days like today. That‘s what keeps you going. That, the fans and the trophy at the end of it.”
Steven Davis was one of the four goalscorers as he produced a man-of-the-match display. “The last month he has been outstanding,” Weir added of his team-mate. “It‘s great to see him at the top of his game.”
Davis said: “We knew from experience that it’d be tough, and it was important for us to get the first goal that set us up. We got our rewards.”
Manager Walter Smith was just glad to see his side keep their destiny in their own hands, adding: “We had a good edge early on in attack, and, after Alan McGregor made a good
save we tightened up. We were a little bit sloppy in the last third and we could have had one or two more goals.
“We had to show that edge — that was the most vital. We‘re delighted with the performance and this has been a big week for everyone. The pressure is here all the time. You can tell the players are looking forward to these last games.”
