Soccer:West Brom defender Steven Reid has been ruled out for the rest of the season with ankle ligament damage, head coach Roy Hodgson has confirmed.

The Republic of Ireland defender suffered the setback during the Baggies’ shock 1-0 win over Chelsea last weekend and a scan has confirmed his worst fears.

The former Blackburn player is set to undergo surgery with Hodgson admitting he will be out of action for “around 12 weeks”.

Hodgson said: “He has done so well for the club since I came in just over a year ago. He has been outstanding.

“Unfortunately we lost Steven during the Chelsea game and it looks very much as if he is going to be out for the rest of the season.

He is going to require surgery and you are probably talking about him being ruled out for around 12 weeks.

“It is a big blow because Steve is one of those consistent and dependable sort of players.

“Unfortunately for us, he had only just come back from another ankle injury and had done well in the few games he was fit.

“We missed him in the spells when he was unable to play and this is disappointing news.”

Number two goalkeeper Marton Fulop will miss the game at Manchester United on Sunday with chicken pox and Luke Daniels will act as back-up to Ben Foster.
