Charlie Christie quit as Caley Thistle boss after their 2-1 defeat by St Mirren left them bottom of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with no points from three games.

And Warnock, who left Bramall Lane after United were relegated from the English top flight last season, immediately threw his hat into the ring.

He told the Scottish Daily Star: "I have often talked about managing up in Scotland. We have family up there and my wife has already said she would like to live up in Scotland at some point.

"I'm dying to get back into the game and if Inverness or anybody else want to talk to me then I'd be delighted to do so."

Current Derry City manager John Robertson has also been linked with a return to the Highlands after director of football Graeme Bennett refused to rule out appointing a former manager.
