Monaghan United captain James O'Callaghan conceded a penalty and was sent off in a bizarre incident as his side still managed to beat Cobh Ramblers with a late goal at Gortakeegan on Saturday night.
Leading from a Darren McKenna goal on 16 minutes, Monaghan were thrown the ball back by Cobh on 34 minutes after the home side had put the ball out of play to allow an injured player treatment.
O'Callaghan received the ball and attempted to play it back to his goalkeeper, but it was short and Cobh striker Donal Golden raced in only for an angry O'Callaghan to take him down. O'Callaghan was sent off and Golden scored from the resulting penalty.
McKenna earned Monaghan their reward for a dominant second-half display by firing home in the 85th minute.
The match between Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
