SCHOOLS' RUGBY LEINSTER JUNIOR CUP/ St Fintan's 17 Muont Temple 8: A powerful last five minutes from St Fintan's High School enabled the Sutton nursery to overtake Mount Temple in the Leinster Schools' Section A Duff Junior Cup semi-final at Castle Avenue yesterday.
Mount Temple started well and Hugh Gill's second-minute penalty settled their nerves. It was soon followed by a superb try from the same player when a quick exchange between backs and forwards opened the door for Gill to sprint home to make it 8-0 after 11 minutes.
Slowly, St Fintan's mastered the problems that a strong wind brings. Their pack, led by number eight Dean Soady, kept the ball tight and scrumhalf David Farrell sniped over at the posts following a series of surges from the forwards.
Centre Michael Winterson converted to leave the minimum between the sides at the interval.
Mount Temple were soon on the front foot again but they could not find a way past a resolute defence and, as time ticked by, St Fintan's launched a break-out.
Centre JJ Plunkett swerved to avoid the tacklers on a wonderful run to the line four minutes from the end of normal time and Soady plunged over from a five-metre scrum for the score that sealed victory.
