Schools Rugby/ Leinster Junior Cup Section B: St Patrick's Classical School caused the first upset of the Leinster Schools (Section B) Fr Godfrey Junior Cup by edging out St Andrew's College 10-8 in the first round at Ashbourne yesterday.

Outhalf Liam Bourke's early penalty was cancelled out by a reply from Marcus Hyde. Then, number eight Akhalaque Khan went from a five-metre scrum for prop John Foley to follow up for the try, converted by Bourke, in the 20th minute.

Although, St Andrew's clawed their way back into it when wing Eoin Campbell crossed for their only try, they couldn't find the score to take them into the next round.

Kilkenny College got the better of a highly entertaining struggle with qualifiers Skerries Community College by 23-17 at Cill Dara RFC. Wing David Rath, scrum-half Foster Horan, hooker Ross Elmes and centre Johnny Yates claimed the four tries between them. It was just enough to see off Skerries, who recorded three tries through centre Michael Sherlock, wing Philip Tucker and outhalf Kevin McGrath.

Wesley College did all the damage required during a three-minute spell before the break for an 8-0 win over Mount Temple at Distillery Road. Scrumhalf Greg Hawe kicked a penalty before a series of rucks shifted the point of attack from right to left until an overlap was created for wing Sam Cosgrave to fly into the corner.

Temple were far from over-run and they had first-class individual performances. Captain John Oscar Gibbons was all action at openside, outhalf James Higgins kicked well and secondrow Sam Geaney dominated his area of the lineout.

Centre Stephen Hackett-Delaney struck for two tries and wing Ian Byrne for one to seal St Gerard's 20-0 passage to the next round at Anglesea Road. They certainly didn't have it all their own way against a High School outfit they had previously destroyed 62-3 in the Leinster Schools Junior League.

High School had their chances, but couldn't take them. Tight-head Padraig Harrison, half-backs Ian Duggan and James Sadlier, centre Darragh Hunt and fullback David Cosgrave all played well.
