Irish rowers set off in some strength for the Home Internationals in Scotland tomorrow and the Copenhagen Regatta tomorrow and Sunday. The selectors have ranged wide in their selections for Strathclyde. The men's eight, which have reportedly been doing well in practice sessions and would have strong hopes of a win, features three oarsmen from the Neptune eight which had an emphatic victory in the National Championships last weekend, three from Trinity and two from Muckross. Skibbereen's John Wholley joins former clubmate James Lupton, now of Trinity, in the double scull and both are also in the quad.In the sweep rowing categories the women's selections are as eclectic as the men's but Commercial's clean sweep of senior sculling events last weekend is reflected in the choice of the heavyweight quad to provide the personnel for this class and for the double and single scull.

Commercial's strong showing in women's sculling may draw even more reward at the World Championships in Cologne in September - but this weekend is crucial. The Commercial lightweight quad have been given their chance to impress national director of coaching Thor Nilsen in Denmark. Heavyweight single sculler Albert Maher has also been given his chance to make an impact.Copenhagen is also important for the men's lightweight four, although winning selection for the World Championships should not be as big an issue. Tony O'Connor and Neville Maxwell were simply outstanding at the National Championships, with four titles each, and Brendan Dolan and Derek Holland teamed up with them to take three of their own. But this weekend they take on the world's best at home.Denmark have won all three World Cup regattas this year and are Olympic and world champions. Nilsen plans to put the Irish in against the Danes whether the hosts row in the heavy or lightweight categories, so an instructive weekend is in prospect.
