TCD win battle of the students

While Dublin University found reason to celebrate yesterday with a win over their old sparring partners, University College Dublin, it was Corinthians who will look on the weekend as particularly satisfying with a win over last year's league runners up Avoca, at Whitechurch Park. Gary Hinds secured the students' win at Grange Road yesterday when he scooped over UCD goalkeeper after a switch right at a short corner in the only goal of the game, with Corinthians slotting in two against an out of sorts Avoca.

Colin Ross hit Corinthians' first goal after 30 minutes with Wesley Rothwell adding the other with an opportunistic effort. James Benson's initial shot hit the post before rebounding across the goal to Rothwell, who gratefully took advantage.

In the League, however, it is Pembroke who continue to set the pace.

Having deservedly despatched Avoca last week, they ran in three goals against Railway Union to only one reply. The champions opened the scoring through Andy Cooke and Turlough O'Siochain before Paul O'Brien replied for Railway. To the delight of coach Jonathan Cole, Darren Hanna finally made sure of the outcome when he scrambled home a late goal.

Three Rock Rovers and Monkstown settled on a goal each when they met at Grange Road with scores from Gary Ringwood and Justin Sherriff while Glenanne unhinged UCD and ran in nine goals to none in reply.

Graham Shaw collected a welcome hat-trick with Stephen Butler and Joe Goulding picking up two goals each. Clinton Murphy and Paul Fitzpatrick added two more in the biggest tally of the weekend.
