Cork and Kerry go again

Cork and Kerry will have to do it all again after Fionn Fitzgerald's 72nd minute point broke Rebel hearts and earned the Kingdom a Munster Senior Football Championship final replay following a scintillating encounter in Killarney yesterday.

Keith Duggan was at a buzzing Fitzgerald Stadium to witness the All-Ireland champions latest escape act after they were cut to shreds by Cork for stretches of play only to find the extra gear when needed.

Cork boss Brian Cuthbert was left to rue Kerry's late point which saw them sneak a 2-15 to 3-12 draw and felt his side were deserving of a Munster title after a brilliant, but ultimately fruitless, performance.

Kilkenny too good for Galway

At Croke Park Kilkenny asserted their dominance to lift a 70th Leinster Senior Hurling title despite a moment of inspired individual brilliance from Galway's Joe Canning.

Brian Cody’s men ran out 1-25 to 2-15 winners to reach their 16th All-Ireland semi-final in 17 years against a Galway side who flickered sporadically but couldn’t sustain the scoreboard pressure needed to ruffle the All-Ireland champions.

Canning's goal was the game's standout moment, with him fielding a long delivery with his left hand before pirouetting and smashing home with his right in one fluid movement, and Galway manager Anthony Cunningham feels there is relatively little between the two sides.

However the Leinster final was a disappointment for those who thought Galway were going to really test Kilkenny, writes Nicky English.

Elsewhere yesterday Fermanagh routed Antrim 1-12 to 0-11 in their Round 2A football qualifier, while Limerick had too much for a game Westmeath side in Mullingar, advancing to the second round of the hurling qualifiers after a 4-15 to 1-12 win.

After a short breather Wimbledon resumes today with British number one Andy Murray taking on Ivo Karlovic on Centre Court, and the Scot can take inspiration from Roger Federer's sublime return of service on Saturday when trying to deal with the bombs the giant Croatian will be sending his way, writes Johnny Watterson.

Maguire just misses out on Masters

World number one amateur Leona Maguire came agonisingly close to an astonishing win in the Ladies European Masters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club yesterday, eventually finishing runner-up to America's Beth Allen after a bogey on the last.

Bernd Wiesbergerproduced a flawless final round 67 in Paris to finish 13 under par and win the French Open.

Dan Martin’s Tour diary

In his Tour de France diary Dan Martin looks back at a sweltering first stage time trial inUtrecht which saw him finish in 95th place, before a second stage which saw him get bogged down following a crash. The second stage went to Germany's Andre Greipel who pipped it in a sprint finish.

Rio on the cards for Ireland men’s hockey

Ireland men's hockey team's hopes of making the 2016 Rio Olympics were given a major boost yesterday after they turned over Malaysia 4-1 in Antwerp to finish fifth overall in the World League semi-final.
