Soccer: Champions League
Arsenal kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive with a remarkable 2-0 win over Bayern Munich last night - the hosts secured the three points thanks to late goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil, and despite the German champions having 70 per cent of possession and completing over 400 more passes.
Arsenal’s extraordinary sequence of reaching the knock-out stages in each of the last 15 seasons was straying dangerously close to being discontinued before Giroud, fresh off the substitutes’ bench, made the most of a rare mistake from Manuel Neuer to change the complexion of this match.
Chelsea were the other English side in European action last night, they hit the woodwork twice in a 0-0 draw away to Dynamo Kiev - with Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic returning to the starting line-up.
Tonight league leaders Manchester City host Europa League winners Sevilla, while Manchester United travel to play CSKA Moskow.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini has had to dismiss suggestions that Yaya Touré is unhappy and claimed he is more than satisfied with the midfielder's form - following an explosive interview the former Barcelona player had last week with L'Equipe.
Rugby: World Cup
Gordon D'Arcy is heading this morning's post-mortems of Ireland's World Cup exit - and the former centre says that early coaching is the key to future success.
D’Arcy says that we need to change the way we coach rugby on these shores - just as Argentina did - “Argentina are not trying to play like New Zealand, they are playing like New Zealand. To do that we have to change the way we coach rugby in this country. Like they did.”
Boxing
Meanwhile Irish Sports Council chairman Kieran Mulvey has given the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) 24 hours to consider an agreement tabled in August that would have prevented the controversial departure of head coach Billy Walsh - "My view now is that deal should be offered to Billy even at this late date and give up the nonsense that's going on now in the IABA about this."
GAA
According to Michael Reynolds, CEO of the Leinster GAA Council, any successful proposal to stage Dublin's championship matches outside of Croke Park will come at a price – and not just a monetary one. When voting on the matter next month Reynolds says it must be acknowledged that most counties and players want to play their games at GAA headquarters.
