Timmy McCarthy, Cork's All-Ireland winning forward, has been named in Larry Tompkins's football panel for Sunday's National League trip to Crossmaglen to play Armagh.

McCarthy takes his place on the bench together with his hurling colleague and established dual player Sean O hAilpin, who has recovered from the injury which has sidelined him since the League resumed.

It is the Castlelyons player's first call-up to senior competitive football action. Overall the team shows only two changes from the 15 which secured such a good result in Galway nearly two weeks ago.

Into the team come the experienced Don Davis, who is listed at left corner forward, and Micheal Cronin, who started last September's All-Ireland football final at wing forward. A central influence in UCC's progress to the county and provincial titles, he was also on the Naomh Aban team which won the intermediate title.

Named as captain by virtue of UCC's success, Cronin lines out at centre forward after the conclusion of the college's All-Ireland club campaign - coincidentally against Crossmaglen.

Davis's return is at the expense of Seamus Landers of Youghal, whom he replaced in Tuam, whereas Cronin comes in for Jeremy Canty, who was also replaced in the Galway match.

The defence and centrefield remain unaltered, although All Star Anthony Lynch, having survived UCC's Sigerson weekend, returns after missing the last match with illness. Former captain and All-Ireland medallist Steven O'Brien is also named on the bench after making his return to action as a substitute in Tuam.

Armagh will not be naming their side until tomorrow when the status of the Crossmaglen players is decided on, in advance of the All-Ireland club final in little over a fortnight.

Ironically, opponents Na Fianna from Dublin are again likely to provide Armagh with Kieran McGeeney and Des Mackin, who have been available throughout the League. Joint leaders in Division One A, Roscommon, have suffered a bad loss in the run-up to their top-of-the-table meeting with Kerry in Killarney. Bernard Butler, who had just recovered from an ankle injury, was involved in a serious motor accident at the weekend and suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg.

Tyrone, meanwhile, have had to delay naming their team to face Galway as Art McRory and Eugene McKenna take stock of the Sigerson final weekend. Paul McGuirk pulled a hamstring playing for UUJ on Friday and will not make the team, whereas Cormac McAnallen, a member of the victorious Queen's side, is not recovered from his exertions and did not train last night.

Mayo, languishing near the end of the Division One B table, won't be releasing a team until tomorrow.
