Golf:Ulster successfully defended their Women's Interprovincial title after a hard-fought win over Munster in yesterday's final at the Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle.

Ulster eventually defeated Munster 5½-3½ to retain their title but the favourites were made to work for their win with Danielle McVeigh once again playing a lead role.

The morning foursomes were tied 1½-1½ before the outcome was decided by the six afternoon singles matches.

In the top match, McVeigh came from two down to close out her match on the 17th (2 and 1) against Gillian O’Leary. It was another early point on the board for Ulster as McVeigh’s win came shortly after the in-form Louise Coffey was a comprehensive 6 and 5 winner over Jean O’Driscoll.

Munster’s Chloe Ryan defeated Victoria Bradshaw 3 and 1 and Emma O’Driscoll was too strong for Paula Grant, winning 5 and 3, to keep the contest firmly in the balance.

Charlene Reid edged Ulster ahead with her one-hole win over Karen O’Neill in the second match. When news filtered through that Lucy Simpson was dormie three-up on Sinead Sexton in the bottom match, Ulster could begin the celebrations. (Simpson won 2 and 1).

Connacht secured third place with their 5½-3½ win over Leinster.
