Ciara Finucane struck a blow for the unseeded during yesterday's quarter-finals in the Dunlop Irish Open Junior tennis championships at Fitzwilliam.
The undaunted Donnybrook girl shocked top intermediate seed Ashley Wynne of Wicklow in a three-setter that provided the most interesting result in this year's tests. Finucane lost the opening set, but took the second and final set for the loss of only four games.
Cork's Emma Murphy, the strongly fancied top-seed in the under-18 event vindicated her rating with a 6-0 6-0 win over Kate O'Flynn of Malahide.
O'Flynn's clubmate Colin O'Brien continued to dominate at the top of the senior event this time beating Nicholas Wiehe 6-2 6-1.
