Weather takes it toll

BRITAIN resembles some thing of a curate's egg as prospects for racing towards the end of the week vary from course to course. Today's meeting at Towcester fell to frost and snow yesterday, leaving the all weather Flat card at Lingfield where no problems were reported and Sedgefield as the day's surviving fixtures.

Sedgefield's meeting hangs in the balance and clerk of the course John Cleverly will hold an inspection of the track where the going is currently described as good to firm, good in places today 7.30 a.m.

"There is still some snow left on the track but it is going and we are trying our best," said a course spokesman.

There was better news of tomorrow's meeting at Folkestone, where a spokeswoman for clerk of the course Geoff Stickels gave an upbeat report. "The course is free from frost and snow at the moment and we have no problems."

But the news from Kelso is not so encouraging. Stewards are to hold a further inspection at 2.30 p.m. today to decide whether tomorrow's meeting can go ahead but prospects are poor. Tomorrow's meeting on the Fibresand at Southwell where the going is standard is not in danger.

Only a deterioration in the weather will claim the valuable Agfa Diamond Chase and Agfa Hurdle fixture at Sandown, where the course was reported yesterday as being raceable.

Wetherby, due to host the £15,000 added Marston Moor Chase, has no inspection pencilled in at present.
