Canada's Mike Weir plunged back to earth early in the second round at the Deutsche Bank Championship today. Weir, who posted a magnificent 10-under 61 to take the lead on Friday, was unable to stay at such lofty heights on a benign morning at the Boston TPC.
With two bogeys in the first four holes, the 2003 Masters champion relinquished the lead, slipping back to eight under.
Taking over in front were Korean Charlie Wi and American Briny Baird at nine-under, while Swede Richard Johnson made a strong start, picking up three shots to improve to seven-under after seven holes.
Most of the European big guns, including Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter, had late tee times.
It was the last day for Casey and Poulter to impress European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo, who will name his two wild card picks tomorrow to complete his 12-man team to take on the Americans at Valhalla in Kentucky next month.
Casey shot a 68 in the first round while Poulter posted a 70. Harrington and Garcia are assured of making the team automatically.
