Dermot Weld failed to add to his impressive record in Arlington Park, Chicago, on Saturday night as Golden Arrow managed only fifth behind the 23 to 1 winner Union Avenue in the $250,000 American Derby.
Pat Smullen had last year's National Stakes runner-up in a perfect position on the turn in but Golden Arrow couldn't quicken with the principals at the finish of the Grade Two which Weld had won three times before.
Instead it was Union Avenue who ran out a half length winner from Can't Beat It with the ex-Aidan O'Brien trained Amigoni in third.
Weld has a number of runners at Ballinrobe this evening and there will be plenty willing to bet that the Montjeu filly Reside can break her duck in the nine-furlong maiden. Her two-year-old form was on softer ground than she will face now, however, and maybe that could swing the verdict the way of Menkaura.
Spot The Subbie looked slightly unlucky when a beaten favourite at Tipperary on his last start but looks worth another shout under Wayne Lordan in the nine-furlong handicap.
The Co Louth trainer Harry Rogers can have a good meeting with Stravinskaya well drawn in the first and Chuinn Mhuire in good form for the apprentice handicap after a decent effort behind King Rama at Killarney.
