What do you say? Okay, missing a cut is bad, especially when you're Tiger Woods, but worse things have happened in his life in recent months. A second successive 76 left the world's number one on 152, 12 over, and ready to sail off in his yacht, Privacy, a couple of days earlier than planned. It's not the end of the world.
Tiger's little tale of woe
Yet it was a journey Woods would prefer to have delayed. "I just didn't execute properly. I didn't drive the ball all that well. I didn't hit my irons well. Nor did I have the speed (on the greens) again. So that is not a good combo," said Woods, who had never missed a cut in a major as a professional, a streak going back 37 championships.
Woods, playing for the first time since the death of his father, remarked: "I am pissed, and that pretty well sums it up. I thought I was playing well enough to shoot an under-par round today and I didn't do that. It's not rust. I just unfortunately didn't put it together at the right time.
"I just felt that if I kept plodding along I could have turned it around with just one putt or just one shot. I just didn't."
Woods hadn't played since the US Masters in April, but rejected suggestions that perhaps he should have played in a warm-up tournament prior to Winged Foot.
"No," he said, "I wasn't ready to play golf."
The next major is the British Open at Hoylake next month, and Woods plans to make an appearance at the Western Open in Chicago before then.
Hard lessons for Campbell
The US Open trophy will have to find a new home, after Michael Campbell failed to survive the cut. Campbell added a second-round 77 to his opening 75 to finish on 152, the same figure as Woods, and felt he "didn't do my homework" in setting out to defend the title.
"I'm just disappointed I am not defending or doing well over the weekend," he said. "It's one of those things that happen, and you just learn from it. This week was a lesson for me, and I need to go back and reflect on it and learn from it."
Toms backs out
David Toms didn't get a chance to salvage his US Open aspirations. The former US PGA champion withdrew prior to the second round citing a back injury suffered while playing the 12th hole in Thursday's first round.
