Winning only part of the plan

Italy A v Ireland A: Viadana (6.30, Irish time). Traditionally Ireland have encountered few problems against their Italian counterparts at A international level and the likelihood is that it shouldn't change in Viadana tonight.

Despite the disappointment of a 22-22 draw with Scotland, a match in which they were fortunate to draw, they should have far too much ability for the Italians.

In a World Cup year, this match is as much about individual performances as it is about a victory. If the senior national side continue to win as expected at Stadio Flaminio tomorrow then breaking into that panel will prove difficult and those with ambitions of a place in Australia will need to grasp every available opportunity at A level.

The promotion of Rob Henderson and John Kelly to Eddie O'Sullivan's squad means that promising Leinster centre David Quinlan starts alongside Gordon D'Arcy in midfield, James Topping retaining his place on the right wing and the return of Ted Robinson - he withdrew from the Scottish match through injury - on the other wing. Jeremy Davidson will partner Donncha O'Callaghan in the second row.

This game represents a perfect vehicle for players to offer a reminder to O'Sullivan. In this respect senior internationals Eric Miller, Kieron Dawson, Simon Easterby and Justin Fitzpatrick will be especially keen.

Jeremy Staunton's aptitude as a full back will come under scrutiny while D'Arcy will be keen to display his versatility in a position that several observers suggest could be the best outlet for his talents. While coach Matt Williams will demand a victory the scope is there to pursue an expansive approach.

O'Callaghan can augment a burgeoning reputation while the back row have the football nous to ensure the continuity game that Ireland crave. Mossy Lawlor's addition to the bench is a timely reward for an excellent season on the wing for Munster while Aidan McCullen and Mick O'Driscoll have also done well at provincial level. The onus is on the players to produce quality displays within a team context. Ireland will win but the demands extend further than that.
