Sir, – The Minister for Justice says that removal of Ireland’s blasphemy law will “confirm Ireland’s status as a modern democratic society” (“Bill to end blasphemy offence introduced”, News, September 19th).

Bearing in mind that the current law dates back only to 2009, is the Minister of the view that Ireland was not a modern democratic society nine years ago? – Yours, etc,

PAVEL MARIANSKI,

Dungarvan,

Co Waterford.

Sir, – If the law on blasphemy is repealed, will God still be ineffable? – Yours, etc,

MARY McEVOY,

Dublin 2.
