NI youth exodus

A chara – It is beyond depressing to read about the Pivotal report (“Young people leaving Northern Ireland due to sectarian divide”, December 6th). The report paints a picture which, it seems, has not changed since I left to go to an English university 45 years ago.

The situation in 1976 was a deal worse than it is now, but the avenues for hope and change are still blockaded. If ever a society was ill-served by an archaic and purblind political caste, it is Northern Ireland; this renders the report’s prescriptions and advice almost comical.

The joke went that NI was “a place with a problem for every solution”; that is as true today as it ever was. – Le meas,
