Regulating Facebook

Sir, – It’s very simple: if you don’t agree with Facebook showing a video of an adult punching and stamping on a screaming toddler then delete your account. I have. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Sadly, the primary method of disseminating the blatant lie of Holocaust denial is social media, both larger global entities such as Facebook and local Irish-based social forums.

Jonathan Swift recognised the dangers of dissemination of lies: “Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.”

It was once thought that we are entitled to our own opinions but not our own facts. Those days have based. Truth and fact are disposable commodities, and less valued now. Lies told often enough by enough people become accepted as our new truths. – Yours, etc,
