Assistant News Editor

Applications are invited for the role of Assistant News Editor to join The Irish Times editorial team in Tara Street.

The Assistant News Editor works as part of the News Desk to service the demands of a busy digital news operation and print edition.

The role involves planning and initiating news coverage, identifying news priorities and story angles and managing and editing day-to-day coverage. The successful candidate will be expected to help reporters to generate exclusive and diary news stories for digital and print under pressure of tight deadlines. Working with our audience team, they will be expected to help ensure the best treatment of those stories on all platforms.

Experienced journalists with a strong news sense, good organisational skills and the ability to deliver accurate news stories for publication will be considered for this opportunity.

The appointee must show an ability to work independently and with others in initiating and developing news and features. The person appointed must also possess initiative, excellent judgment, decisiveness and good interpersonal and skills.

Assistant News Editors work a variety of shift patterns from early morning until late evening. This is a fixed term contract. The salary and other terms and conditions of this appointment will be based on the agreement between The Irish Times and the National Union of Journalists.
