Now in its sixth year, this professional development course is presented by leading experts in data protection law and policy. Lectures are delivered online from October to March in short 1.5-hour early morning sessions to allow a wide range of professionals to participate regardless of their geographical location.

Data protection has gained an increasingly high profile in Ireland and internationally over recent years. Since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which significantly reformed the regulatory regime, it is more important then ever that citizens, businesses and public institutions become familiar with their rights and obligations under Irish and EU data protection laws.

Upon completing the Advanced Diploma, participants will be able to understand the legal framework governing data protection in Ireland and the EU; identify the structure of the regulatory regime, including enforcement and remedies; and apply the practical application of data protection law.

The GDPR is of such wide application that it will affect anyone dealing with personal data. Accordingly, the course attracts prospective data protection officers and members of DPO teams; those working in technology and data-driven sectors; employed and self–employed people whose work brings them into contact with data protection issues regularly in large, medium and small enterprises; barristers and solicitors; employees of financial institutions; and those working in central or local government, as well as the health and education sectors. Having a diverse group of professionals studying this course together allows participants to learn from each other, especially during tutorials and Q&A sessions.
