How did you get started in your role?
Growing up, I always had a keen interest in puzzles and solving problems and I still do. I have a background in IT and a Master’s degree in data analytics from the National College of Ireland. Given my background, the Bank of Ireland graduate programme, specifically the data, technology and change stream felt like a perfect fit.
I am now working on the finance transformation team. We are responsible for the design, development and implementation of innovative technical solutions that solve business and finance issues and reduce risk.
Why did you choose to work with Bank of Ireland?
Bank of Ireland is one of the country’s leading financial institutions, it is also an integral part of the Irish community. The Bank of Ireland graduate programme always had a great reputation so I was really keen to apply.
The company’s values and ideology aligns with my own. There is a big focus on inclusion and diversity and wellbeing within the company. There’s also great benefits that graduates can avail of such as hybrid working, wellbeing portal, online GP services and much more.
What would you say are the key skills and capabilities necessary to be good at what you do?
Problem solving is essential, it is super important to be solution focused in this role as you encounter many roadblocks. Being a team player is also vital, the ‘one group, one team’ motto is something that I see every day in Bank of Ireland.
What is the best part of your job?
I love that I have involvement in solving real time issues that can affect millions of customers. I get great enjoyment investigating root causes of issues and working on solutions that will have an overall positive impact.
Coming into the company as a graduate, I was surprised at the level autonomy I was given. Within the first month, I was tasked with projects and got some great hands on experience. The team entrusts graduates with a lot of responsibility from the start, so you’ll have plenty of chances to develop and learn throughout the programme.
The people and culture are definitely some of the best parts about working in Bank of Ireland. Everyone’s very helpful, knowledgeable and open which makes learning a lot easier. Happy to say I have colleagues that I can now call friends.
If you could go back in time and give yourself a piece of advice at the start of your career, what would that be?
Everyone starts at the same point when they begin their career, so be kind to yourself, have patience. The graduate programme allows you to see multiple aspects of the business so it is important to keep an open mind and be proactive in seizing career growth opportunities even if it’s outside your comfort zone.
Always ask questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question. It’s important to use your own initiative but don’t be afraid to look for guidance. Often a colleague has come across a similar roadblock that you might be experiencing, don’t be afraid to ask for advice, we can all learn from each other.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about applying for this position?
Go for it! The programme offers a wide range of opportunities so you will be sure to find something you like.
If you get to the interview stage, make sure to be confident in your ability. Practice interview questions with your friends so you are comfortable. Be yourself and show the team that you are passionate and eager to learn and work with them.
