Imagine a region where nature paints with a palette of frost and fire, a realm of ever-changing light, from the glowing Midnight Sun to skies that swirl with the dazzling Northern Lights. In the far north, where the land meets the Arctic Circle, the silence of snow-covered forests is broken only by the distant call of reindeer. This is northern Scandinavia – a land that invites you to unwind the clock of modern life and unlock the door to one of the world’s greatest wonders.

Oroko Travel Specialist, Becky Theriault, brings her extensive knowledge and passion to crafting bespoke adventures to Scandinavia – which includes Sweden, Norway and Northern Finland. “The most rewarding part of planning these holidays is knowing our clients will fall in love with it. Listening to their wishes, crafting the perfect itinerary, and then hearing how much they enjoyed their journey is incredibly fulfilling,” says Becky.

Today, she shares her insights to inspire your next adventure to this spectacular part of the world.

Embracing the Arctic Spirit in Swedish Lapland

Swedish Lapland is often called Europe’s last wilderness, and for good reason – it’s where the spirit of the Arctic truly comes alive. According to Becky, a must-do experience in Swedish Lapland is dog sledding through its pristine, snow-covered landscapes. “The thrill of being led by huskies through enchanting forests and across frozen lakes is indescribable,” says Becky. “My ideal winter’s day in Swedish Lapland would start with a delicious breakfast followed by a husky sled ride, then lunch over an open fire in the forest,” Becky shares. “Maybe a snowmobile safari in the afternoon, and after dinner, I’d unwind in an outdoor hot tub and sauna before bed.”

Becky also speaks fondly of her cultural experiences there, where she took part in a Nordic winter skills masterclass with a local, Sami guide, learning the art of snowshoeing, building a fire in the snow, and brewing tea and coffee over an open fire before enjoying a traditional Sami teepee meal.

Accommodations in Swedish Lapland are as remarkable as the landscape itself. Choose from iconic ice hotels or opt for rustic lodges that provide a cosier retreat. “Brandon Lodge is an incredible place to stay with kids,” says Becky. “The best part is, after a day of outdoor adventures, you can return to the warmth of your cabin. It’s all about hot chocolate and snug, inviting spaces – a wonderful destination for families.”

Swedish Lapland is also celebrated for its cuisine, with a strong emphasis on local, farm-to-table fare. “Every meal showcases the land’s rich offerings,” Becky explains. “Each dish is carefully crafted to bring out the authentic flavours of Sweden.” Indulge in the likes of hearty reindeer stew or enjoy traditional sweet treats like lingonberry pannacotta.

Festive Family Memories in Finnish Lapland

“I’ve had so many amazing experiences in Finnish Lapland. During my last summer exploration, we witnessed the Midnight Sun. It was incredible. We walked home from dinner, it’s midnight and the sun was shining across the river in – it was just amazing.” says Becky.

Finnish Lapland is the one and only place in the world where you can meet Santa Claus himself, in his own village in Rovaniemi. When you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right into the pages of a storybook, making it the ultimate destination to experience the magic of Christmas. Families can spend the morning tobogganing, going on reindeer rides and taking part in the special ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle, which runs right through the village.

Of course, Finnish Lapland offers a diverse range of outdoor activities in the winter months. Try your hand at ice fishing, explore snow-covered forests on snowmobiles or go husky sledding through the wilderness in search of the Northern Lights.

Mighty Fjords and Vibrant Culture in Norway

Shrouded in mystery and natural wonder, Norway’s landscape – where Vikings once roamed – is dramatic in its beauty. From the frozen north of Svalbard to the vast fjords of the west, it truly is a photographer’s paradise, and each well-defined season offers a unique perspective of the kingdom.

In the summer months, the landscape is bathed in a golden light, and the days are long and inviting. Becky’s perfect summer day in Norway would be kayaking under the glowing sky, dining al fresco surrounded by nature, taking a scenic afternoon hike and finishing with a refreshing dip in a lake followed by a relaxing sauna session. For those eager to experience the magic of winter, November to March is perfect for witnessing the Northern Lights, dog sledding and snowmobiling.

Oroko clients are consistently delighted with their holidays to Norway, most notable being the popular Norway’s Cities and Fjords suggested holiday – which can be completely tailored to you. The journey begins in the capital, Oslo, exploring the city’s most celebrated spots before boarding the iconic Flåm Railway. This scenic westward route reveals breathtaking wonders like the majestic Sognefjord. The historic city of Bergen, known as the “heart of the fjords,” offers the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable trip.
