Former Goldman Sachs and Lloyds Bank executive James Garvey has been appointed as chairman of Goodbody Stockbrokers following the death of Gary Kennedy earlier this year.

Mr Garvey, who currently serves as chairman of Martello Expert Services and as a non-executive director on the boards of both S&P Global Ratings Europe and UK, will join the board of the AIB-owned stockbrokers with immediate effect.

Non-executive director Joan Kehoe had been acting as interim chair after Mr Kennedy’s death was announced in February following a short illness.

Mr Garvey is a former Goldman Sachs partner and also previously headed up the markets division at Lloyds Bank where he worked between 2009 and 2019 before founding Martello. He is also a member of the investment committee of Trinity College Dublin’s endowment fund.

“We will really benefit from his vast investment banking experience, particularly in the months ahead as we refocus the business through investment in strategic growth opportunities,” said Goodbody chief executive Martin Tormey in a statement. “His appointment reflects our strategic ambitions as we seek to position ourselves for long-term success. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Joan Kehoe for her contribution as Interim Chair and assuming the role in incredibly sad circumstances following the passing of our esteemed former Chair Gary Kennedy.”

Mr Garvey said: “I am delighted to join the Goodbody board. I look forward to working with the board to support Martin and his colleagues in realising their strategic objectives.”
