Alcatel of France is discussing a merger with Lucent Technologies in one of the largest transatlantic corporate deals ever attempted.

If successfully completed, it would create a giant in the telecommunications world, valued at $71 billion (#81 billion) based on yesterday's share prices and with more than 250,000 employees around the world.
