All eyes on yen struggle nervous markets will be closely watching for signs that the weekend's crunch meeting between Japanese officials, G7 deputy finance ministers, the US Deputy Treasury Secretary, Mr Larry Summers, representatives from 11 Asian nations - including China - and officials from the IMF and the World Bank has produced a reform plan of substance and a credible commitment from Japan to follow it through in a bid to stave off recession and lift the threat to the nation's currency. Any failure of the beleaguered yen would have severe knock-on effects for neighbouring currencies, only recently emerging from the initial Asian crisis. It would also have a deflationary impact worldwide and scuttle forecasts for economic growth in the EU and the US, with implications for a stable transfer to EMU.
