Anglo Irish Bank has made a number of changes to its senior management team to fill the vacancies created by the appointment of Mr David Drumm as chief executive designate.

Mr Drumm, who takes over from Mr Seán FitzPatrick in January, had been in charge of Anglo's banking operations in Dublin, a role that will now be assumed by Mr Declan Quilligan.

Mr Quilligan will retain responsibility for the bank's area offices, its Irish operation outside the capital.

He will report to Mr Tom Browne, a board member and the director in charge of wealth management, who was one of Mr Drumm's rivals for the top job.

Mr Tony Campbell moves from the bank's private banking division to the US to strengthen the management team there.

Mr Drumm had previously held responsibility for the US operations, in addition to the Dublin banking operation.

Mr Campbell will be replaced in private banking by Mr Peter Butler, who previously served as group head of banking.

Sources close to the bank described the changes as "a natural transition" rather than a shake-up, and said they were a response to the vacancies created by Mr Drumm's promotion.

It is understood that there are no plans to appoint someone to the post of chief operating officer, recently vacated by Mr Tiarnan O'Mahoney.

Like Mr Browne, Mr O'Mahoney lost out in the race to succeed Mr FitzPatrick in the top job, and he has decided to leave the bank. Both Mr Browne and another contender for the top job, Anglo's managing director in the UK, Mr John Rowan, intend to remain with the bank.
