The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland (CCI) has licensed e-commerce security specialist, Baltimore, to set up a secure infrastructure for e-commerce which will carry the endorsement of the CCI. The service will be known as ChamberCERT, and will issue digital certificates to member organisations which authenticate online business, including Internet banking, online shopping and e-mail.
Based on Baltimore's UniCERT system, the unique digital certificates will act as identification, or passports, guaranteeing the identity of participants in online exchanges. Working in tandem with Baltimore's MailSecure system, CCI organisations will be able to exchange confidential messages with the assurance the data cannot be read, altered or spoofed by an unauthorised person. CCI members will be able to register for the service at local level, and local chambers will be actively promoting the adoption of the digital certificate technology.
